We recommend you visit Yungay during summer to avoid the strong rain, although if you are interested in adventure sports around the Callejón de Huaylas, it is better to visit the region during winter.
Yungay has a mediterranean climate, known for its strong rain during winter and a dry summer. Average temperature in Yungay is 54°F, and the annual precipitation is 1417mm.
The Christ of Yungay is a giant statue of Christ built in the city during 1965 and 1966, on top of another architectural marvel: the city’s graveyard, which was built between 1982 and 1903. The cemetery is located southwest of the old city, and built in several levels on top of an artificial hill (a pre-inca castle), named Huansakay mountain.

The Llanganuco Lakes are part of the Huascaran National Park. The lakes are named Orconcocha (male lake) and Chinancocha (female lake). Both are separated by 0.6 miles, and Orconcocha is 10 m.a.s.l. Higher than Chinancocha, which puts it at 3860 m.a.s.l. Subterranean lakes link both lakes together, and people believe they are meant to represent a mating ritual. The lakes have a beautiful turquoise color, and you can find a great deal of biodiversity around them.

Caves with remains of human life from 10 000 a.c. These caves were used as a temporal encampment during hunt season, and are an important testimony of the life of the first human groups that lived in the country.
